Local Schools and Colleges
Strasburg’s young scholars attend the schools of the Shenandoah County Public School system. Three schools are located within town limits: Sandy Hook Elementary School, Signal Knob Middle School, and Strasburg High School.
Local colleges and universities such as Lord Fairfax Community College and Shenandoah University are ready to help students achieve their higher learning ambitions once they graduate from high school. Other colleges and universities that are within a 60 mile drive from Strasburg include Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV; James Madison University in Harrisonburg; Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD; George Mason University in Fairfax; and Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD.
Parks & Recreation
Whether your interests include canoeing, horseback riding, hiking or mountain biking, it’s pretty clear that you’ll be spending most of your free time in the great outdoors. If your idea of relaxation includes a game or two out on the green, then head over to any one of Shenandoah County’s nearby golf courses, including Front Royal, ShenVallee Golf Course, Blue Ridge Shadows, Jacksons Chase, and Rock Harbor, to name a few.
Town Park is Strasburg’s community park. Maintained by the town, the park features tennis and basketball courts, baseball, softball and soccer fields, a large playground, swimming pool, and several picnic areas. The Strasburg River Walk trail can also be accessed at Town Park, connecting the park with Strasburg High School.

Underground caverns are abundant throughout Shenandoah County with group tours available everyday except on major holidays. Guests will be guided by a knowledgeable tour guide who will explain the many different rock formations and the cave’s geological history.
Did you also know that Shenandoah County is home to some of the most well-renowned vineyards in the area? It’s true and if you happen to be a wine connoisseur, or even enjoy having a good glass of wine with your meal, then a vineyard and winery tour is in order.
If you’re interested in learning more about Strasburg’s historical past, the Strasburg Museum is an excellent place to start. Featuring relics from the Civil War, blacksmith, potter, and copper shop collections, the Strasburg Museum once served as the home to the Strasburg Stone and Earthenware Manufacturing Company, which was later converted into a depot for the Southern Railway. The museum did not officially open until 1970. Strasburg also served as one of many battlefield sites during the Civil War. In fact, Strasburg is an ideal place to start a tour of the many battlefields in the area; some even have reenactments.
Community events like Oktobertfest and Mayfest bring residents together in a fun and casual setting, and serve as a great way for residents to catch up on the latest news and gossip. Additionally, the town of Strasburg will soon be celebrating its 250th anniversary of its founding in 2011, so you can expect plenty of celebrations to the delight of residents around town.
